Summary of Innovation

Just in time for MODEX, Lenze is launching the evolutionary new o450 magnetic motor-driven conveyor roller (MDR), a technological leap forward in drive technology for intralogistics applications. The energy-efficient decentralized drive solution is used in roller and belt conveyors, cross-belt sorters, and diverters in warehouses, postal, distribution centers, and airports. Lenze uses the Vernier principle for the motorized roller. The Vernier motor combines a 3-phase AC motor with a loss-free magnetic gear effect.

This innovative drive is a progressive step forward, offering unparalleled levels of efficiency, performance, and reliability for an external drive rotor motor. The outer casing of the motor, which is fitted with permanent magnets, rotates while the inner axis with the copper windings is stationary (i.e., the stator.) This stator is constructed like a modulator in which the Vernier principle modulates a transmission ratio, similar to a caliper gauge that superimposes two scales.

In the Vernier motor, the modulator teeth in the stator have exactly one less pair of poles. This is known as the Vernier principle: A two-pole magnetic field is created in the stator, which works with the x magnetic fields of the permanent magnets. This means for every full revolution of the magnetic field in the stator, there is a 1/x revolution in the rotor. This "magnetic gear effect" leads to a low-rated motor speed capability.

Innovation Statement

The new gearless Lenze o450 MDR motor design delivers a progressive solution for the conveyance industry, delivering increased power, reduced energy consumption, and cost-effectiveness. The o450 also delivers significant sustainability metrics including the reduction of rare earth materials by 50%.

Applicability

The evolutionary motor design of the o450 provides three main benefits for the industry. 1) The o450 delivers up to twice the power rating of the existing MDRs on the market; 2) energy use is decreased by up to 30%; 3) the number of variants is reduced by up to 85%.
