Summary of Innovation

In industrial applications, such as in automated guided vehicles (AGV), sensors are used that convert mechanical measured variables into electronic data, such as rotary encoders. Due to the increasing complexity of the tasks performed by these sensors — from parameterization and status queries via remote access to multiple data output and error detection and transmission — equally complex transmission interfaces to the controller are required: bus interfaces based on Ethernet, for example.

TWK has developed a new series of functionally safe encoders that meet high functionality and safety requirements in a very compact design with a diameter of just 42 mm — as multiturn or single-turn devices. Traditionally, particular attention is paid to the robustness of the devices. As a result, this design can also withstand high loads under harsh environmental and operating conditions.

Innovation Statement

The new TRx42 series of rotary encoders with an outer diameter of 42 mm combines a wide range of functions with the high safety requirements of SIL2 and even SIL3 in a miniature design for the first time.

Many innovations and projects, some of which have already been incorporated into other larger products, are now part of the TRx42 plus further improvements in terms of signal processing and interface performance. In addition, an extremely wide range of designs, functions, interfaces and certificates has been realized.

Applicability

As a functionally safe device is now quickly available and usable for every application, this increases the safety of the application, for example in an automated guided vehicle system. This also makes a logistics system more efficient and therefore more cost-effective. The generally higher and safer degree of automation means that monitoring by people can be minimized.
