Richard J. Sherman

Director of Strategic Development, Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP)

Rich Sherman is Director of North America for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and an internationally recognized writer, researcher, consultant, and speaker on trends and issues in supply chain management and related technologies. As a research director, he successfully launched the supply chain advisory services for AMR Research and was a leader of the team that developed the SCOR model and founded the Supply Chain Council. Rich has held senior management positions with corporations such as Microsoft, EXE, DEC, IRI, Unisys, Numetrix and others serving clients in retail, distribution, manufacturing, and logistics services. He is a frequent contributor of articles on supply chain, and speaks regularly at conferences, symposiums, and universities.

He currently serves on the boards of Lead Time Technology, Retailigence, TSE Global Logistics, and the University of Alabama Supply Chain Institute. Rich is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame for both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Facing unprecedented challenges to compete in a global economy, supply chain executives must recruit and retain skilled personnel. The talent pool, however, is shrinking. Every year companies face a “gray tsunami” with thousands of personnel at all levels entering retirement. And, supply chain leadership in the 21st century requires new paradigms, adoption of best practices and development of game changing strategies. How will your company meet these challenges? How will you prepare yourself and your associates for a career as a SC professional? How do you encourage a learning organization and culture of change? Do you have the talent to meet new demands and practices? How will you leverage SCM capability to achieve excellence and compete in the 21st Century? This session will provide insight to meet the challenges and opportunities to prepare supply chain professionals to compete in a global economy.

Room C203

Alberto Alemán Zubieta, Chief Executive Officer, Panama Canal Authority

Scheduled for completion in 2014, the expansion of the Panama Canal is certain to change global freight movement and open up new opportunities, but precisely how is yet to be determined. By allowing much bigger container ships and other cargo vessels to easily reach the Eastern United States, it will alter patterns of trade and is already providing incentives to East and Gulf Coast ports to deepen harbors and expand cargo-handling facilities. The end result should be faster and cheaper shipping of some goods between the United States and Asia. During this keynote, Panama Canal Authority CEO, Alberto Alemán Zubieta will detail how these infrastructure improvements will benefit importers and exporters and explain how you can prepare for the impact of this supply chain game changer on your operations.

Integrated Food Chain Seminar

Room C101

Food chain integration requires that entities within the food supply chain cooperate to achieve certain desired results. The foundation for integration is that each component in the food chain must themselves be operated effectively. However, for effective integration, companies must consider both their own needs and those of downstream participants in operating their portion of the cold chain.

The Integrated Food Chain (IFC) Center is an industry/academic joint initiative to identify and resolve critical integration issues across the end-to-end food chain. The focus is on designing, analyzing and continuously improving cold chains for perishable food products. The IFC Center was established by Georgia Tech's Supply Chain and Logistics Institute and Sterling Solutions LLC as a collaborative effort among academic, government and industry constituents. Our vision is to assure that growers, processors, retailers and logistics providers can deliver on their "quality promise" in highly efficient ways through the use of systematic and synchronized linkages throughout their supply/cold chains.

2012 Georgia Logistics Summit-Sustainable Competitiveness

Rooms 302-307

Georgia Center of Innovation for Logistics

The State of Georgia will hold its Fourth Annual Georgia Logistics Summit hosted by the Center of Innovation for Logistics. Rapidly growing in size every year, last year's event hosted 1,300 participants, from 587 companies, across 21 states (85% from private industry) and has become widely recognized as a valuable, unique and highly anticipated event.

This year, themed as "Sustainable Competitiveness" the 2012 Georgia Logistics Summit will explore how logistics and logistics-enabled companies compete and grow by focusing on two important yet contrasting perspectives: What is working? and What is of concern?

For the first, selected companies will share with attendees what they are successfully doing in logistics to sustain their competitive position and distinguishing themselves in today’s marketplace. The second view provides the flip-side, looking at topics both internal and external to their operations that might jeopardize their competitive position.

Summit attendees will hear these perspectives across six individual "Opportunity Sessions:"

  • Retail Products
  • Durable Consumer Goods
  • Automotive
  • Food & Beverage
  • Intermodal
  • Heavy Equipment

Coupled with these breakout sessions featuring a range of private industry speakers, are three plenary sessions that allow to hear from and interact with chief economist, Walter Kemmsies, industry leaders in maritime logistics and international experts. Companies of all types and sizes will gain valuable insight and information on the products, partnerships and possibilities for sustaining themselves in a recovering economy.

Next Generation Packaging, Kitting, and Palletizing: Can one robot do it all?

Room C105

Bringing together vendors, researchers, and end-users.

In the material handling community, three apparently disparate subgroups exist in the areas of kitting, packaging, and palletizing. There are, however, significant similarities in these tasks, in the way their requirements are represented, and in how their performance is evaluated. This seminar will explore these similarities and look for ways in which common representations and automated planning systems can be developed to enhance performance and simplify setup and execution. The desired end results are next generation material handling systems and the measurement science and standards for planning and modeling. The resulting systems will be flexible to a wide range of applications.

The goal of this workshop is to explore material handling with respect to kitting, packaging, and palletizing in order to find areas of common interest where resources may be combined to provide impact to the overall industry.

The seminar is free to all registered show attendees.
